Mandate of Research Wing:

BPR&D was established on 28.08.1970, with Research Division having the following as its mandate:

• Identification of challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in the country and initiate, stimulate and guide research in this field in coordination with various institutions, organizations, ministries, universities, research institutes, States/ UTs and other agencies;
• Publication and dissemination of research outcomes to all stakeholders, viz., States/ UTs/ CPOs/ CAPFs; and
• Providing policy inputs to MHA on various policing and correctional administration related issues.

Mandate of Correctional Administration Wing:

Correctional Administration work was entrusted to BPR&D in 1995, with the following mandate:

• Review of Training Programmes in view of the changing social conditions, introduction of new scientific techniques and other related aspects;
• Preparation of uniform Training Module including course, syllabi, curriculum, etc. for providing training at various levels to the Prison staff in the field of Correctional Administration.

BPR&D also sponsors prison training courses to prison departments and prison training institutes of States/UTs.
